Old Doll Needs Restoration

August 17, 2011

Lately I have been reading old doll magazines and have learned that before one restores an old doll they should practice on a cheaper old doll.
Today I found an unmarked, composition doll very cheap.  She seems to be in decent condition with some dirt and crazing.  However, lesson one is when I look over a doll I need to wear stronger glasses. Today I left my 2.50 lenses home and only had my 1.75 computer glasses, this was not good as the doll looked to be in decent shape when I bought her but when I looked at her with stronger glasses she had more cracks and crazing than I realized.  However, since the price was right, much less than what I have seen over the past two weeks for dolls in worse condition I'm still pleased and know she will still make a good doll for my first practice at cleaning an old doll.  Her lips are in wonderful condition but her eyes definately need to be redone.

Does anyone have an idea of the year, make, model of this doll?  Any hints on how to clean her?  Clicking on the photos may make them larger and clearer.

 Clean and can see again.

Sue she is definately a Patsy type. When the Effanbee Patsy was all the craze, many companies made their own versions. And many were unmarked, as yours is. Anne

Its me again! I'd try cleaning her with cold cream and remove it with dry tissues or a soft cloth. you are a good artist; look at some pics of dolls with painted eyes to get an idea for restoratiion.

Thanks Anne for the tip about the cold cream, I read somewhere that there was something at home one could use but I can't remember it now. I know I kept articles from old doll magazines about cleaning compo dolls but right now I can't locate them. Not sure when I'm going to try to clean her, I just know I'm not doing anything in this high humidity.
